Abstract

922,642. Stuffing-box substitutes. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. Sept. 26, 1961, No. 34529/61. Class 122 (5). Sealing means between relatively rotatable parts, for example a rotary shaft 20 and its stationary housing 21, comprises inner and outer L-section rings fitted together with their radial walls 11, 14 adjacent each other and a rubber &c. member having a sealing lip 18 urged by a garter spring 19 into contact with the cylindrical wall 10 of the outer ring or a liner 60 therefor, concentric sealing lips 17 engaging the radial wall 11 of the outer ring and a tubular portion 15 by which the inner ring is frictionally held to rotate with the shaft, the outer ring being press-fitted in a bore 22 in the housing 21. The portion 15 has a lead-in part 16 to facilitate the insertion of a flange 23 on the shaft and a bead 12 on the outer ring facilitates its removal from the bore 22. In use the lip 18 prevents escape of oil from the bearing 25 and the lips 17 prevent ingress of dirt &c. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the outer ring rotates and the inner ring is stationary.
