Abstract

902,452. Stuffing-boxes. SYKES Ltd., HENRY, and DAGWELL, H. L. Nov. 19, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 39155/58. Class 122 (5). A stuffing-box for a pump shaft 1 comprises packing rings 2 compressed by a gland 3 in a sleeve 8 resiliently mounted in the shaft housing 7 by a plurality of axially-spaced rubber members 15 to allow lateral movement of the shaft which has a clearance 16 with both the gland 3 and the housing 7. The members 15 are integral flanges of a rubber sleeve 11 secured at its outer end by a flange 12 to the housing 7 and abutting a flange 9 of the sleeve 8 at its inner end. In a modification, Fig. 3, the rings 2 are compressed between a liner 17 fixed to the shaft and a metal sleeve 26 resiliently mounted in the housing 7 by rubber rings 25. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the packing sleeve is resiliently mounted by rubber rings compressed between radial end flanges on the sleeve and opposing faces on the housing 7.
