Abstract
783,197. Stuffing-box substitutes. FLEXIBOX, Ltd. Jan. 18, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3317/55. Class 122 (5). To obtain optimum facial contact area in a rubbing collar shaft packing in which either the stationary seal ring a or the rotary seal ring b is loaded by a spring c and sealed to its associated part by a flexible gasket f, the area of the contact face of the faster wearing seal ring is made less than the theoretical optimum and the face is bevelled as at a<SP>1</SP> or b<SP>1</SP> on its inner or outer side, according as to whether the gasket f is on the inner or outer periphery of the spring-loaded ring, so that as wear occurs the area of the face increases on its inside or outside respectively until the optimum condition is reached. In Fig. 1, the stationary ring a is the faster wearing and the rotary ring b is driven by the spring c which is an interference fit on parts b<SP>1</SP> and e. In Fig. 2, the rotary ring b is the faster wearing. Formulµ stating the theoretical optimum relation between dimensions d, D and S are given.
