In a mechanical seal comprising a non- rotatable sealing ring 4 mounted in an annular recess 2 in a housing 1 and resiliently urged into contact with a rotatable sealing ring 5, the non-rotatable ring 4 is prevented from rotating by making either its outer or inner peripheral face and the adjacent wall 6 or 7 of the recess elliptical. As shown in Fig. 1, the ring 4 is pressed towards the ring 5 by an 0-ring 8 and its outer peripheral face and the adjacent wall 6 are elliptical. In a modifies. tion, Fig. 2, the ring 4 is urged axially by springs 10 and sealed to the housing 1 by sealing rings 13 and 14 compressed between the spring housing 12 and the ring 4.
