Abstract

1,007,552. Mechanical seals. GARRETT CORPORATION. Oct. 31, 1961 [Nov. 1, 1960], No. 38949/61. Heading F2B. A face seal for a rotary shaft 2 comprises a ring 3 fixed to or integral with the shaft and a pair of concentric abutting rings 6, 7 surrounding the shaft and secured to the shaft housing 11 by a bellows 10 and together providing a sealing surface 8 which engages a mating surface on the ring 3, the ring 6 on the high pressure side of the seal being of porous material and having a sealing face area much larger than that of the ring 7 which is non-porous material. The effective areas of the bellows and rings 6, 7 exposed to the pressure of the sealed fluid are such that a slight force acts to maintain the face 8 in contact with the ring 3. The rings 6, 7 are housed in a retainer 9 fixed to the bellows 10 which acts as a secondary seal and also urges the retainer towards the ring 3. The rings 6 and 7 may be of ceramic or graphite. The ring 6 may act as a lubricant reservoir.
