Abstract

987,387. Shaft seals. FEDERAL-MOGULBOWER BEARINGS Inc. March 17, 1964, No. 11223/64. Heading F2B. A shaft seal comprises a metal wear ring 13 which is engaged by a flexible lip 35 of an elastomeric sealing member 34 and is mounted on an elastomeric sleeve 21 which is reinforced at one end by a metal ring 20 bonded thereto and has a lip 25 at its other end that detachably locks the ring 13 on the sleeve. The member 34 is bonded to a flange 32 of an inner case 30 clamped by a spun-over end 42 in an outer case 40 having an offset radial flange 46. A garter spring 36 may be provided to increase the contact pressure of the lip 35 on the surface 16 of the ring 13. When the seal is installed on the shaft to be sealed, the sleeve 21 is compressed between the shaft and the ring 13 and the case 40 is press fitted in a bore in the shaft housing. The radial flange 18 of the ring 13 acts as an oil flinger. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the sleeve 21 has an integral projection on its bore to fill a keyway in the shaft.
