Abstract

651,299. Stuffing-box substitutes. SIGMUND PUMPS, Ltd., and RIESTER, W. F. K. April 8, 1948, No. 9904. [Class 122(v)] A seal between a rotating shaft 1 and a housing 4 comprises a first annular sealing surface 9 formed on the shaft or on a part 7 fixedly mounted on the shaft, a sleeve 10 surrounding the shaft with a clearance 11 and anchored against rotation relative to the shaft, a second annular sealing surface 14 on one end of the sleeve 10 making rubbing contact with the first sealing surface 9, a ring 22 fixed within the housing and surrounding the sleeve between the ends thereof and making substantially line contact with the surface of the sleeve, and packing rings 25 fitted between the exterior of the sleeve and the internal wall of the housing. The ring 22 is bevelled at its inner periphery and is formed by a thin flexible diaphragm. A spring 23 disposed between the ring 22 and a flange 12 on the sleeve 10 urges the sealing faces 9, 14 into contact with one another. The packing rings 25 are channelsection rings of flexible material. The sleeve 10 is anchored to the housing by pins 16 in the housing engaging notches 18 in the sleeve.
