Abstract
625,111. Rubbing-collar seals for shafts STEVENS, A. H. (Crane Packing Co.). May 27, 1946, No. 15987. [Class 122(v)] A seal between relatively movable elements consists of an axially resilient bellows member 15 having radial flanges 20 which are pressed against a sealing ring 16 and an impeller 13 of a pump 10 by means of a helical spring 24, the ends of which bear against rigid washers 22 having internal flanges 23 to retain the spring 24. The sealing ring 16 which engages a flange 14 of the impeller 13 slides against a stationary member 19, thereby preventing leakage. Fig. 2 shows a modified sealing member 25, the tapered end of which is in contact with the rotating shaft. The inturned edge 29a of a washer 28 exerts a compressive force upon the member 25, thereby effecting a seal with the shaft 12. The bellows may be outside the spring and have its end flanges 20 on the inside and pressure reinforcing rings be disposed in the folds of the bellows to prevent deformation thereof under high pressure. To centre the bellows, lips may be provided on the sealing ring 16 and the impeller 13 respectively.
