Abstract

574,619. Packing glands. WHITAKER, J. H. Feb. 9, 1944, No. 2388. [Class 122 (v)] A packing gland comprises a flanged rubber sleeve interposed to form a seal between a shaft 8 and rubbing ring 9 contact between mating surfaces being maintained by garter spring 11 in an annular groove 3 and gland spring 13 pressing against a collar 16 bearing on the sealing member 2 and fitting over the carbon rubbing ring 9. The centre of the sleeve 1a which is slightly tapered and/or the centre portion of the annular ring at the flanged end may be of reduced thickness, and may be corrugated to enhance resilience.
