Abstract
832,178. Stuffing-box substitutes. SVENSKA KULLAGERFABRIKEN A.B. Nov. 12, 1958 [Nov. 27, 1957], No. 36423/58. Class 122 (5). A sealing device between two relatively rotatable members 2, 6 comprises a resilient collar 11 connected to the member 6 and having a sealing lip 14 engaging the member 2, and a resilient O-ring 16 mounted on a conical portion 12 of the collar so as to increase the sealing contact of the lip on the member 2 and seal against a surface 17 which is associated with the member 2 and disposed transverse to the axis of relative rotation between the members 2, 6. As shown applied to an axle-bearing, two identical collars 11, of rubber, which may be provided with reinforcement 10, are mounted at opposite ends of an outer bearing member 6. The sealing lips 14 are formed on flange portions 13 which locate in grooves formed in the member 2 and a bearing clamping ring 7 and provide labyrinth gaps 15. A shoulder 20 is formed on the flange to retain the O-ring during assembly. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a self-contained sealing unit is provided in which a rubber collar 25 is vulcanized to a metal outer ring 21 with its sealing lip 27 engaging an inner metal ring 22 under the action of an O-ring 28; the O-ring also seals against a radial surface of the latter ring. A flange 29 on the ring 22 engages with a shoulder 30 on the collar for maintaining the two parts together during assembly.
