Abstract

825,348. Stuffing-box substitutes. GELENKWELLENBAU G.m.b.H. April 24, 1958 [July 6, 1957], No. 13050/58. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIV] A seal for a needle roller bearing 3 of a crosstype universal joint comprises a resilient sealing ring 5 embracing a tapered portion 2a formed, adjacent the end of the bearing, on the pin 2 of the cross-piece 1. The sealing ring 5, which may be provided with two sealing lips 5a, 5b, for contact with the tapered portion 2a, is retained by a metal ring 6 engaging in a groove 7 formed in the bush 4 containing the needle roller bearing 3. In a modification, the free end of the ring 6 may be formed with an extension which is located between the sides of a U-section metal ring secured to the pin 2 thereby forming an additional labyrinth-type seal.
