Abstract
833,154. Stuffing-box substitutes. GELENKWELLENBAU G.m.b.H. April 24, 1958 [July 6, 1957], No. 13051/58. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIV] A seal for the needle roller bearings 10, Fig. 1, of a double universal joint comprises resilient sealing-rings 11, Fig. 2, having one or two radially-directed sealing lips 12, 13 and one or more axially-directed sealing lips 14. As shown in Fig. 1, the sealing rings are mounted on pins formed on the crosses 8, 9 of the joint, the pins being pivoted in the needle roller bearings 10 which are carried in bushes 10 located in a casing 5; the ends of the needle rollers are supported on retaining rings 16 which may be bonded to the inoperative surface of the sealing- ring. In a modification, the radial and axial sealing lips may be separated by a recess in order to increase their resilience and the retaining ring 16 may be profiled on the surface in contact with the bearings and be embedded in the face of the sealing ring.
