Abstract
744,034. Ball &c. bearings. ETABLISSEMENTS METALLURGIQUES BOYER. Dec. 2, 1953 [March 21, 1953], No. 33526/53. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A shaft bearing is sealed against dust by a side face seal comprising a pair of coaxial sealing rings 12, 13 supported and urged into sealing contact with a sealing washer 10 carried by the shaft, or the shaft housing, by diaphragms 14, 15 integral with an annular member of resilient material fixed to the shaft housing, or the shaft. A ball or like bearing is mounted in the end wall 2 of a conveyer roller 1 by a U -section rubber tube 7 which surrounds the outer race 6, has inwardly extending radial flanges 8, 9 and is formed integral with the diaphragms 14, 15. The washer 10 is keyed on the shaft 3 at 11 and an elastic material spacing sleeve 21, which fits tightly on the shaft, is compressed between the washer 10 and the inner race 5 respectively axially located by abutment rings 20 and 19. Preferably, the outer ring 12 is of graphite and the inner ring 13 is of felt; the washer 10 being chromium-plated on its end faces. In a modification, in which the washer 10 rotates and the rings 12, 13 are stationary, the diaphragms 14, 15 are integral with a radial flange integrally formed at the outer end of the sleeve 21 and the washer 10 is secured to the flange 8 of the sleeve 7. Lubricant may be supplied to the bearing through a central bore in the shaft 3 having lateral passages opening into the spaces adjacent one or the other sides of the bearing. When the lubricant is supplied to the space 18, a spacer ring is fitted between the sleeve 21 and the race 5 and has radial slots therethrough registering with the lateral lubricant passages in the shaft.
