Abstract

719,222. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH HYDROMECHANICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and DENNY, D. F. June 30, 1952 [July 11, 1951], No. 16475/51. Class 122(5) A sealing arrangement between relatively rotatable inner and outer members comprises a sealing ring secured in fluid-tight manner to a surface on the outer member and in sealing rubbing contact with a land surface on the inner member which is constructed in two parts, one surrounding the other, attached together by means preventing relative rotational movement therebetween but permitting limited radial movement, the outer part providing the land surface being constrained to run true to the aforesaid surface of the outer member. A rotatable shaft 12 is sealed by a unit mounted in a recess 14 in the shaft housing and comprising a casing 15 containing a flexible lip type seal, a ball bearing 16, and a sleeve 11 which loosely surrounds the shaft and is resiliently supported thereon by a rubber ring 13, which may be bonded to the sleeve and the shaft. The holding flange 17a of the seal is held against the inner surface of the casing 15 and the lip 17b sealingly contacts the sleeve 11 constrained by the bearing 16 to run true to the inner surface of the casing. In a modification the sleeve 11 has an integral radial flange and an end face of an annular ring of rigid material is spring-urged into sealing contact with the radial flange. In another modification (Fig. 3) a sleeve 51 loosely surrounds a shaft 52 and is driven therefrom by a rubber tube 53, one end of which is secured to the sleeve and the other end is secured to a collar on the shaft. The sleeve 51, which may be diametrically split, is sealed by a normal stuffing-box, the packing 56 serving to constrain the sleeve to run true to the stuffing-box recess.
