Abstract

1386602 Stuffing-boxes GEC DIESELS Ltd 8 May 1972 [7 May 1971] 13703/71 Heading F2B A rotary shaft 11 is sealed where it extends through an aperture 12 in a vessel wall 13 by means comprising at least one deformable sealing ring 19, 20 engaging the shaft and centred thereon by an adjoining shaft bearing 21 and located in a housing 16 flexibly connected to the wall by a sealing member, e.g. flexible bellows 22, to allow radial movement of the shaft. The rings 19, 20 are lip type seals separated by the bearing 21. Rotation of the housing 16 is prevented by a pin 27 on the wall engaging a slot 26 in the housing. Grease or a lubricant, which may be water, or a gas may be supplied to the bearing 21 through a port 28 at a pressure sufficient to prevent leakage from the vessel past ring 19. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, packing rings 37, 38 and 39 are compressed in the housing 16B by a gland ring 18B and a resilient annular sealing member 35, which may be of rubber or nylon, is compressed between the housing 16B and the wall 13B by nuts 32 on tiebolts 31 engaging eyes 30 on the wall.
