Abstract

752,266. Stuffing-box substitutes. INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING GENERAL RESEARCH & LICENSING CO. March 19, 1954 [May 22, 1953], No. 8089/54. Class 122(5) A mechanical type seal for use between relatively rotatable members, such as a shaft 4 and its housing 5, comprises an sealing ring 1 carried at the inner periphery of, and urged into facial contact with, a collar 19 on the shaft by an annular member comprising a dished elastic element 8 radially slotted from its outer periphery towards the centre to form spring fingers and covered by an air impervious flexible diaphragm or diaphragms 9, 10 having the same internal diameter as, and a greater external diameter than, the element 8 and secured at their outer periphery, as by a clamping ring 6, to the housing 5. The diaphragm 10 is formed on its inner periphery with a sleeve 20 on which the sealing ring 1 is mounted and secured to by a sleeve 7 having at one end an abutment collar 12 and radially expanded at the other end to force the end of the sleeve 20 into a groove. 21 in the sealing ring. The element 8 is preferably of metal and may be provided with a.wearing face of anti-friction metal. The diaphragms 9 and 10 may be of natural or synthetic rubber, plastic material, or thin metal foil. In a modification (Fig. 12) the element 8 is completely embedded in a single flexible impervious diaphragm 14 provided at 'its outer periphery with a sleeve 15 having a coned internal surface and secured between the housing 16 and a ring 17 having a similarly coned external surface and abutting a shoulder 18 in the housing A grit excluding ring 22 comprising a flexible annular member secured at its outer periphery to the ring 17 and acting at its inner periphery on the shaft may be provided. Specification 644,326 is referred to.
