Abstract
735,801. Stuffing-box substitutes; jointmaking packing. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. May 21, 1954 [May 22, 1953], No. 14526/53. Classes 122 (3) and 122 (5). A sealing element adapted to be compressed axially and/or radially between the parts to be sealed comprises an inner metal core of a resiliently deformable nature wholly or partly covered by an outer covering formed of a polymer of tetrafluoroethylone. The inner core may be completely enclosed by a covering of polytetrafluoroethylene moulded thereon. In one form, Fig. 2, a helical coil metal spring 20 is inserted in a U-section covering 21 of polytetrafluoroethylene. Alternatively, the spring 20 may be replaced by a V-section ring of resilient metal. In another form, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inner core comprises an inner helical spring partly enclosed in a U -section deformable metal ring having an outer covering of polytetrafluoroethylene. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that the inner core may be of synthetic rubber.
