695,408. Oil seals. FORSHAW, R. DUTTON-. April 9, 1952 [April 17, 1951], No. 8909/51. Class 122(v) In a rubber or rubber composition sealing ring comprising an annular body part 1 press fitted on or into its mounting and an integral resilient sealing lip 2 that may or may not be encircled by a garter spring 3 the annular body part 1 includes a resilient reinforcement 5 that is stressed when the seal is mounted so that it exerts a radial thrust to expand the body part against the mounting should the rubber shrink. The reinforcement 5 which may be wholly embedded in the rubber body may be a helical coil of round or square wire or plastic, a split flatsectioned annular metal strip or strips, or an L-section ring having its lateral part slit to form tongues one of which slits may also extend through the other part of the ring. The reinforcement may also be a bimetallic strip that tends to expand the sealing ring against its mounting when the ring is subject to heat, or it may be or have a core of natural rubber that swells due to contact with oil to expand the sealing ring against its mounting. When the reinforcement is non-rubber it may be coated with rubber or plastic before being embedded in the body part. If the reinforcement is helical and has a part exposed in the outer periphery of the sealing ring the exposed part is made non-continuous to prevent oil seepage.
