Abstract

919,370. Stuffing-box substitutes. HYDE & SON Ltd., ROBERT. Dec. 12, 1961 [Nov. 9, 1960], No. 38546/60. Class 122 (5). An oil seal 5 for an axle box 1 comprises a rubber &c. annular diaphragm secured at its outer peripheral part 6 to the axle box and having its inner peripheral part 12 in resilient engagement with both a circumferential surface of the axle 3 and an end face 13 of the axle bearing 2. The intermediate part 9 of the diaphragm is circumferentially corrugated and the inner part is reinforced by a metal ring 15. In the free state of the seal, the face 12a of the part 12 is axially offset from the face 16 of the part 6 so that when the seal is assembled in the box it is stressed to resiliently urge the part 12 against both the bearing-face 13 and the axle 3. The pressure between the edge 11 of the part 12 and the axle is increased by a garter spring 14. The seal may be of " Neoprene " or " Gaco " (Registered Trade Mark).
