Abstract
742,211. Oil seals. GARLOCK PACKING CO. Oct. 6, 1953 [Dec. 5, 1952], No. 27456/53. Class 122(5) A rubber oil seal 10 for a rotary shaft 16 comprises a flexible sealing lip 24 in sliding contact with the shaft and a holding portion 20 press-fitted in the shaft housing 14 and reinforced by a metal ring 28 formed from circular cross-section wire and embedded in' the rubber so that it is spaced from the housing' bore 12. The ring 28 may be either continuous or circumferentially split at one point with the ends abutting. The portion 20 is tapered at 32 to facilitate insertion in the housing..As an alternative to the arrangement shown the seal may be press-fitted on the shaft and have a sealing lip in contact with the housing bore; the reinforcing ring 8 being continuous.
