Abstract
811,835. Shaft seals. GARLOCK PACKING CO. Oct. 3, 1957, No. 31048/57. Class 122 (5). In a sealing device for a rotary shaft 34 in which a sealing element 20 or 50 has a flexible sealing flange 28 or 59 of elastic material pressed against the shaft by a garter spring 36 or 54, displacement of the spring is prevented by a circumferential series of integral lugs 42 or 52 at the free edge of the flange, each lug together with the flange only partially surrounding the spring in cross-section thereby enabling the spring to be applied to or removed from the flange. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the sealing element 20 is of stiff elastic material, for example polytetrafluoroethylene, and is clamped by a ring 24 in a sheet-metal casing 10 fluid-tightly fitted in the shafts casing bore 16. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the lugs 42 are in the form of segments separated by slots extending into the part of the flange 28 under the spring. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the element 50 is of soft elastic material, for example soft rubber, reinforced by a metal ring 56 and has an additional sealing lip 60.
