Abstract
724,341. Oil seals. GARLOCK PACKING CO. April 24, 1953 [July 31, 1952], No. 11428/53. Class 122 (5). In an oil seal of flexible material comprising an annular mounting portion 16 reinforced by a rigid ring 12 and press-fitted in a shaft casing 20 (or on the shaft 28) and an annular sealing flange 24 integral therewith pressed into contact with the shaft (or shaft casing) by the fingers 34 of an annular finger spring 14 the continuous part 36 of the spring overlaps and is supported by a portion 32 of the ring 12. The spring 14 and the reinforcing ring 12 are preformed and, if desired, welded together as at 38 and then bonded to the sealing member 10 by being moulded therewith. The mounting portion 16 may extend axially beyond and around the free edge of the reinforcing ring 12 which may be axially tapered.
