Abstract

877,888. Piston packings; joint-making packings. TANNER, C. L. March 17, 1958 [March 18, 1957], No. 8429/58. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (3). A seal ring 15 comprises a flexible ring 16 having an annular groove 18 consisting of a relatively wide outer section 20 and relatively narrow inner section 21 separated by a shoulder, and resilient means 24 provided in the outer section 20 for resisting compression of the flexible ring 16. The ring 16, which may be formed from metal or plastics such as polytetrafluoroethylene, is shown in Fig. 5 as mounted in a groove 14 in a piston 11, and the resilient means 24 is a corrugated metal strip having overlapping ends; if desired, the inner section of the groove may be a mere slip. When the ring 15 is applied on a flanged pipe joint, the groove is arranged normal to the axis of the ring and in either the inner or outer periphery. In another arrangement, the resilient means 24 is in the form of a ring of rubber or plastic material lacking the wearing quality of the material of the ring 16.
