Abstract

826,214. Piston packing; joint-making packing; stuffing-box substitutes. WALKER & CO. Ltd., J. Feb. 27, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 27361/57. Classes 122 (1), 122 (3) and 122 (5). A sealing ring 4 comprises an annular intermediate part 1 of softer material bonded to annular ring portions 2, 3 of harder material, the intermediate part extending radially inwards and outwards to thereby provide sealing surfaces. The ring 4, as shown applied to a gland 8 of an hydraulic press, may be in the form of a split or continuous ring and the inner portion 1 may be of synthetic or natural rubber and the outer portions 2, 3 of rubberized fabric. The inner and outer peripheral surfaces of the portion 1 are of convex form and extend beyond the inner and outer diameters of the rings 2, 3 whose peripheral edges may be parallel or tapered as shown. The width of the ring 1 is such as to resiliently contact the wall of the gland housing and the ram 9 but the contact pressure may be increased by applying axial compression. The ring, instead of being circular as shown, may be of rectangular or other configuration.
