[Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] Packing c<1> for a shaft, piston, &c. is retained and pressed into con- . tact with the bearing surface by metallic washers b slotted to form resilient tongues b' disposed in pairs with the packing between, and distorted to exert pressure on the packing, Figs. 9, 11 show washers slotted both at the inner and outer peripheries, and distended by ribs i to force the packing both outwards and inwards on to the shaft.
