929,569. Stuffing-boxes. T. D. CASH, J. D. CASH, and M. G. CASH, [trading as CASH ENGINEERING CO.]. Dec. 15, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 42659/59. Class 122 (5). A gland for the piston-rod 7 of an hydraulic ram comprises gland packing 19 compressed between a cover-plate 14 and a ring 17 mounted for limited axial movement in a recess 13 in the cylinder end 8 and sealed thereto by a cup seal 22 or other packing, the underside of the ring 17 being exposed to the fluid pressure in the cylinder whereby the ring is urged axially by that pressure to compress the packing 19. An annular groove 24 and radial grooves 25 ensure that fluid pressure in the cylinder acts on the underside of the ring 17 which communicates with the seal 22 through holes 26 in the ring so that the seal is expanded by the fluid pressure. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the ring 17 is sealed to the cylinder by a diaphragm 30 secured at its outer margin to the cylinder by a bead 33 clamped in a, groove 34 by the plate 14 and at its inner margin to the ring by a ring clip 36.
