Abstract
1496986 Sealing UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO 9 March 1976 09277/76 Heading F2B A reciprocating piston-rod 4 which extends from a chamber 2 containing gas at high pressure, through a wall 1 to a low pressure chamber 3, is sealed to prevent gas leakage, the seal comprising a scraper 16 to prevent lubricating oil from moving along the rod 4 to the chamber 2 and an oil collecting space 18 which is provided adjacent the scraper, the outlet from this space 18 being through a valve 21, 22 which allows the oil to pass through it only when the oil pressure in space 18 exceeds that of high pressure chamber 2. The seal also comprises a resilient sealing gland 11, of fibreglass-reinforced ptfe, pressed against the rod 4 by the wedging action of metal rings 12 and 13 under the influence of a spring 15, the spring _15 also pressing the scraper ring 16 against the rod by wedging between a spring support 17 and the ring 13. The chamber 7 containing the seal is at the pressure of chamber 2, fluctuations being damped by an 0-ring 6. Oil is supplied to rod 4 through a passage 10 to an annular groove 9. The valve comprises a membrane 21, pressure in chamber 7 acting on it, through a passage 25, to close oil outlet passage 23 against the pressure of oil acting on a smaller area on the other side of the membrane. The metal ring 13 has a pressure equalizing passage 27 through it, 0-rings 26 preventing oil leakage from passage 19.
