Abstract

1342707 Piston rod seals UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO 8 Dec 1972 56677/72 Heading F2B In a sealing device for the piston rod 1 of a hot gas engine where it extends through a housing 9 separating the working chamber 6 from the crank-case chamber 7 and comprising two sealing rings 13, 15 separated by a space 21 which is connected to the chamber 6 by a return conduit 22 including a non-return valve 24 allowing leakage gas to return to the chamber 6, the sealing ring 15 is conically tapered at both ends and made of synthetic plastics material and is urged against the rod 1 by being wedged between two complementary metal rings 16, 17 loaded by a spring 19. The housing 9 is sealed to the cylinder 5 by 0-rings 10. A sleeve 18 carrying an oil wiper ring 14 is disposed between the spring 19 and the metal ring 16. The sealing ring 15 may be of "Teflon" (Registered Trade Mark). In use, any oil or vapour leaking from the crank-case into the space 21 past the ring 15 is drained off by a separator 23 in the gas leakage return conduit 22.
