Abstract
861,557. Stuffing-box substitutes. SULZER FRERES S.A. Sept. 30, 1959 [Oct. 1, 1958], No. 33226/59. Class 122 (5). Sealing-means for the shaft 5 of a turbocompressor or other machine comprises a sealing chamber 6 to which sealing medium, for example oil, is supplied at a pressure higher than that in the interior space 1 of the machine casing 2, a collecting-chamber 7 between the sealing-chamber 6 and the space 1, a mechanical seal between the sealing and collecting chambers and comprising an axially movable non- rotatable bush 12 urged by spring means 9 into contact with a collar 14 on the shaft, and a clearance type seal between the sealing chamber and the atmosphere. Sealing oil is supplied by a pump 19 from a tank 18 to the chamber 6 and returned via a pressure-regulator 23 connected by a pipe 24 to the chamber 7 and ensuring that the pressure in chamber 6 always exceeds that in chamber 7, preferably by a small amount only. A labyrinth seal 4 is interposed betweenthe chamber 7 and the space 1. The bush 12 is a sliding fit in a flange 8 of a bush 3 in the casing 2, is prevented from rotation by a pin 11, and has a graphite rubbing ring 13. Any oil leaking into the chamber 7 is drained via a float-controlled valve in a tank 27 to the tank 18. The clearance type seal between the chamber 6 and the atmosphere comprises three spring-loaded metal packing-rings 16 secured against rotation by pins 15 and axially slidable with a small clearance 29 on a sleeve 17 secured to the shaft. In a modification, - Fig. 2 (not shown), the packing rings 16 are replaced by a bearing, which acts with the shaft as a clearance seal, the ring 13 is omitted and the bush 12 is made of graphite or polytetrafluoroethylene and sealed to the flange 8 by a packing-ring. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the seal 4 is replaced by two groups of rings fixed to the shafts and forming labyrinth seals with a bore in the bush 3 and sealing gas at a pressure slightly higher than that in the space 1 is supplied to the space between the two ring groups.
