Abstract

784,708. Stuffing-box substitutes. WALKER & CO., Ltd., J. March 22, 1955 [Feb. 23, 1954], No. 5281/54. Class 122 (5). A mechanical seal for the rotor shaft 9 of a pump comprises a housing 1, a carbon ring 11 carried by an annular carrier 10 and resiliently urged by adjustable means into sealing contact with a flange ring 12 rotatably secured to the shaft, and a packing ring 20 in sealing contact with a bore 4 in the housing. The sealing pressure between the rings 11 and 12 is provided by a spring bellows 13 compressed between the carrier ring 10 and a compression ring 14 which abuts at its outer face against a nut 15 screwed on the housing and providing means for adjusting the sealing pressure. The packing ring 20 is an O-ring housed in a groove in the outer periphery of the compression ring 14. A shoulder 6 on the housing ensures that the carbon ring cannot wear down to such an extent that contact occurs between the carrier ring 11 and the flange ring 12. In a modification, Fig. 2, an H-section packing ring 22 is disposed between opposed conical faces on the carrier ring 10 and a header ring 21 and compressed into sealing contact with both the housing 1 and a cylindrical extension 10a of the ring 10 by a series of coil springs 23 which also urge the carbon ring 11 against the ring 12 and are compressed between the header 21 and the ring 14 by the nut 15. The carrier ring is provided with passages 26 entering from the space outside the ring 11 to the central space of the packing ring 22 in order to balance the pressure on the carrier ring.
