Abstract
690,569. Stuffing-box substitutes. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A. July 17, 1951 [July 26, 1950], No. 18697/50. Class 122(v) In a known rubbing-collar shaft sealing device having an annular oil groove h in the bearing face d of the seal ring c the groove h according to the invention is made eccentric to the axis of the shaft collar a to improve lubrication of the contact faces. Oil is fed under pressure to the groove h through ports g in the seal ring c which is mounted in a housing l and urged into rubbing contact with the collar a by springs e. The groove h divides the bearing face d into a radially outward portion d, divided into sections by radial grooves k and a continuous radially inward portion d 2 , and is arranged so that the whole of the rubbing surface of the collar a is in contact with the bearing face d for some period during each shaft revolution. The bore of the housing l may be either eccentric or concentric to the shaft axis; in the latter case the groove or groove and bearing face being eccentrically arranged in the seal ring.
