Abstract

736,568. Stuffing-box substitutes. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. June 14, 1954 [June 16, 1953], No. 16513/53. Class 122 (5). In a rubbing-collar type sealing device for use between relatively rotating parts, such as a shaft 1 and its housing 2, and in which a liquid sealing film is maintained between the annular sealing faces, the sealing liquid is supplied to a groove 6 which is formed in one of the faces 5 and, when viewed along the axis of rotation, is of polygonal form surrounding the axis. The face 5 is provided on an annular member 4 supported in the housing 2 and resiliently urged into engagement with a radial flange 3 on the shaft. Oil under pressure is supplied through ducts 13, annulus 12 and bores 11 to the groove 6 which is a regular octagon. Two or more grooves may be provided, one or more of which may be formed in each of the sealing faces and, when two or more are formed in one face, they may be separate or overlap each other.
