Abstract
763,373. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 4, 1955 [May 4, 1954], No. 12972/54. Class 122 (5). A rotatable shaft sealing arrangement, particularly for steam turbines, comprises a ring formed of abutting carbon segments 4 mounted and retained in a groove 5 in the shaft housing 2 and urged radially inwards by springs 7 to co-operate with labyrinth fins 3 provided on the shaft, rotation of the segments being prevented by stop means, such as a screw 8, located within the groove. The carbon segments and the groove 5 are of T-section so that the carbon ring is retained in the groove substantially concentric with the shaft 1 by cooperation with rims 6 of the groove. Each segment 4 is urged inwardly by a leaf-spring 7 located between it and the bottom of the groove. The labyrinth fins 3 may be of uniform diameter, as shown, or stepped, the inner periphery of the segments 4 being correspondingly shaped. Instead of being T-section, the segments 4 and groove 5 may taper inwardly as a dovetail.
