Abstract

755,238. Stuffing-box substitutes. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER AKTIEBOLAG, Feb. 3, 1954, No. 3183/54. Class 122(5) In a rotary positive displacement machine the rotor end shafts 80 are sealed where they extend through the shaft housing 60 by one or more non-rotatable solid rings 124, 126 coaxial with the shaft, engaged by backing rings 128, 130, and each urged into sealing engagement with a flange member provided on the shaft or on the casing by resilient means, such as springs 136, the arrangement being such as to allow relative radial movement to occur between the solid ring or rings and the flange member whilst maintaining the sealing engagement therebetween. The rings 124, 126, if carbon, sealingly surround a sleeve 120 on the shaft 80 and are urged by the springs 136 into sealing engagement with radial faces 138 on housing members 132, 134. In a modification, Fig. 3, a carbon ring 140 housed in a backing ring 144 is radially spaced from the shaft sleeve 120 and has an end face grooved to form three concentric bearing faces 140a, 140b and 140c urged into contact with a radial flange 120a on the sleeve 120 by a spring 142. The backing ring 144 is sealed by a piston ring 148 and prevented from rotating by a pin 150 attached to the housing 146 and engaging a slot in the ring. Specification 645,848 is referred to.
