Abstract

643,604. Stuffing-box substitutes. HALL, J. S., GARLAND, J., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 23, 1948, No. 8570. [Class 122(v)] A gland for a rotary pump or turbine machine comprises a labyrinth gland ring 1 mounted on the machine shaft 9 and located against an end wall 11 of the machine casing by an annular housing 12 adapted to be secured against the end wall 11 in pressure tight relationship therewith by a detachable or integrally formed flange member 21, the ring 1 having a plurality of peripheral projections 6 which extend into complementary recesses 17 in the housing in a manner to permit relative radial displacement of the ring and housing, and the ring also having a radial face '3 for cooperating with a corresponding radial face 16 on the housing 12 to provide a pressure tight seal between the ring and the housing. Four lugs 6 equi-spaced on a circumferential flange 2 on the ring 1 extend with radial and axial clearance into the complementary recesses 17 in the housing 1 which is prevented from rotating by two slots in it engaging corresponding studs fitted in the wall 11. Flexibility between the ring and housing may be provided by a pair of spring-tensioned piston members which slide in circumferentially directed bores in one radial wall of each of the lugs 6 and carry a flat plate which is forced against the opposite side wall of the recess 17.
