Abstract

690,626. Stuffing-boxes. RIGGS, T. C. May 7, 1951 [June 7, 1950], No. 14193/50. Class 122(v) In a stuffing-box of the type having a gland 4 formed by' laterally separable ring parts 6 held in their assembled position by a retaining member 5 through which the gland tightening force is applied, the said gland parts 6 are provided with an inwardly facing bevel 9 on their end faces which press on the packing so that when the gland is tightened the ring parts tend to be held away from the surface of the shaft 2. The retaining member 5 has slots 8 for the gland studs and is apertured to fit over the parts 6 when assembled and abut against an annular shoulder 7 formed thereon. The inner surface of the parts 6 is relieved for a portion 10 of its axial length. In a modification the shoulder 7 is replaced by a radial flange which is provided on its face adjacent the stuffing box 1 with recesses to facilitate removal of the gland should it be tightened so that the flange abuts the stuffing-box.
