Abstract

598,324. Stuffing-boxes. SIMPLEX PRODUCTS CORPORATION. June 27, 1945, No. 16363. Convention date, July 4, 1944. [Class 122 (v)] A seal for preventing leakage of fluid between a rotating shaft S and a housing H which has an opening 10 through which the shaft extends, comprises an axially resilient metallic sealing ring 20 in sealing engagement with the shaft, annular radial sealing surfaces 23 and 24 provided by the cage formed of parts 13, 14 and 15 surrounding the shaft and non-rotatable with respect to the housing, and radial faces on the sealing ring which make a running seal with respect to the sealing surfaces 23 and 24. A polygonal spring 21 rotatable with and surrounding the sealing ring, urges it into sealing engagement with the shaft. The sealing ring 20, Fig. 4, is slit circumferentially at 27 and axially at 26.
