Abstract
933,944. Stuffing-box substitutes. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Jan. 31, 1962 [Feb. 8, 1961], No. 4755/61. Class 122 (5). Sealing means for a rotatable shaft 18 comprises a resilient split sealing ring 20 urged axially by means, e.g. fluid pressure into contact with a radial face 15 on the shaft housing 13 and urged radially by its own resilience into contact with the shaft, means being provided to prevent the ring rotating with the shaft. A pin 30 fixed to the shaft housing extends into a gap 27, Fig. 5, between overlapping end portions 25, 26 of the ring so that any tendency of the ring to rotate with the shaft brings the pin 20 into contact with shoulder 28 or 29 to thereby open the ring slightly and release it from the shaft. The invention is shown applied to a gas-turbine shaft, the ring 30, which may be of cast iron, being urged against the face 15 by a differential pressure.
