Abstract

632,957. Stuffing-box substitutes. CHERRIE, C. M., and WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON, Ltd. March 24, 1947, No. 8025. [Class 122(v)] In a sealing device between relatively rotating members comprising a rubbing ring 12 formed with spaced end walls defining an annular groove 14 open to the adjacent surface of a concentric rotary or fixed member 1 and maintained in rubbing engagement with a complementary fixed or rotary face 8, a compressible sealing ring 15 is compressed within the groove 14 which has an axial dimension greater than the corresponding dimension of the compressed ring so that the latter is free axially. In an alternative form of the invention the annular groove is on the outward side of the rubbing ring which is held stationary by the compressed sealing ring being fitted between the groove and a fixed casing member around a shaft to which a complementary rotary face is secured.
