Abstract

906,838. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 23, 1961 [March 1, 1960], No. 7258/60. Class 122 (5). In a seal for the rotary shaft 1 of a gas-filled machine comprising a seal member 3 contained in a housing 8 and urged, as by springs 18, into facial sealing contact with a collar 2 on the shaft, the seal member 3 is connected to the housing 8 by a flexible strap 17 which permits limited axial movement of the seal member and holds it free of sliding contact with the housing. Radial movement of the member 3 due to friction between it and the collar 2 may be prevented by a flexible torque strip 19, Fig. 2, or by a small pad (not shown) fitted in the clearance between the member and the housing. The member 3 is sealed to the housing by cup washers 10, 11 and sealing oil is fed through a duct 9 in the housing into a chamber 7 and then through ducts 6 in the member 3 to the sealing surface 4.
