Abstract

920,892. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 9, 1962 [Jan. 17, 1961], No. 1919/61. Class 122 (5). In a seal for the shaft 1 of a hydrogen-filled alternator or other gas-filled machine and comprising a seal ring 3 having an annular surface urged into contact with a shoulder 2 on the shaft, the surface is bounded by two concentric grooves 4, 5 and divided into bearing pads 7 by radial grooves 6 interconnecting the grooves 4, 5. Sealing oil is supplied from the housing 10 via ports 8 to the groove 5 and is discharged from the groove 4 through ports 11. The pads may be relieved by a circumferential step or chamfer 12, Fig. 3.
