941,849. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING Ltd. Oct. 12, 1962 [Nov. 16, 1961], No. 38718/62. Divided out of 941,848. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 1 comprising a rotary seal member 4 resiliently urged axially by springs 5 into contact with a non- rotary seal member 3, the members 3, 4 are split into arcuate sections to permit their removal or replacement laterally of the shaft and are sealed in a housing 2 and carrier 12 respectively by a ring 9, 16 of expandable absorbent material housed in an annular space between the member and its housing or carrier, the ring being exposed to the sealed fluid so that it absorbs some of the fluid to exert a compressive force on the seal member and hold its sections together. The rings 9 and 16, which may be of vulcanised textile fibres or compressed asbestos, are radially split and the ring 9 is housed in a groove 10 in the housing 2 whilst the ring 16 is located in an annular space between radial shoulders 11 and 15 on the member 4 and the carrier 12 respectively. The carrier 12 is slidable on a sleeve 17 that is secured to the shaft and has recesses 21 for the springs 5. Keys 24 on a sleeve 22 secured to the shaft drivably engage keyways 25 in the carrier 12 which drives the member 4 by means of pins 26. The keys 24 are also used during removal of the seal to force the member 4 out of the carrier by engagement with an internal flange 28 on the latter. In a modification the ring 16 is housed in a circumferential groove in the member 4.
