Abstract
564,714. Stuffing-box substitutes. WILKINSON, F. C. W., and CRANE PACKING, Ltd. April 6, 1943, No. 5517. [Class 122 (v)] A sealing device for relatively rotating members comprises a rigid sleeve 7 spaced from both members and engaging at its ends with compressible members 8, 9 pressed apart by a spring or springs 10, a smooth sealing ring 11 being interposed between one or both members 8, 9 and a relatively moving part. Cooling medium is supplied at 6a. The radial surfaces of the members 8, 9 may be formed with suction pockets or eccentric grooves 8b, 9b to prevent slip and the members may be connected by a bellows. Where a number of springs 10 are used, these are housed in pockets in the sleeve 7 which is suitably thickened for the purpose. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the members 8, 9 rotate with the shaft and each comprises two portions connected by a thin neck to enable it to adapt itself to the co-operating sealing ring 11, 11a. The latter bear on rings 14 backed by packings 16. Rings 14 may be provided with renewable bearing inserts.
