Abstract

645.690. Stuffing-boxes and substitutes for. TRIST, A. R. Sept. 20, 1946, No. 28211. [Class 122(v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Seals, Fig. 11, consist of three rings A, B, C, pressed axially by springs W, W<SP>1</SP> and lubricated by an hydraulic differential X. Each ring has parallel faces and inner and outer members engaging the shaft and its housing respectively, the members having springs to counteract centrifugal force. The members may consist of spring blades d, e, Fig. 1, mounted between flanges b, c of the ring a, the free ends of the blades being formed as, or provided with, friction surfaces. In a modification, Fig. 3, the members g, h are cut from the body of the ring and are slightly thinner than the body, a disc being mounted on each side of the ring. In another form, Fig. 7, the friction surfaces consist of pads n<SP>4</SP>, o<SP>1</SP> on outer and inner cylinders n, o provided with tension and compression springs n<SP>1</SP>, p respectively. To centre the rings and steady their operation, rollers y are mounted either in pockets z in the ring or in the housing. The members k, l, Fig. 6, may be pivoted at k<SP>1</SP>, l<SP>1</SP> and engaged by tension and compression springs k<SP>2</SP>, l<SP>2</SP>. The members of Figs. 1 and 3 have their free ends either trailing or facing and the springs may be adjusted so that they respond to the same or different centrifugal forces, and in the latter case they may operate in sequence. The invention is applied to seals for the shafts of rotary or turbine pumps handling corrosive liquids. Large rings are made in two diametrically divided halves with interfitting joggles j<SP>1</SP> Fig. 9.
