Abstract
811,299. Stuffing-box substitutes. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. April 25, 1956 [May 5, 1955], No. 13072/55. Class 122 (5). A rubbing-collar seal has an axially-movable sealing ring c<SP>1</SP> engaging a collar a<SP>1</SP> in a rotary shaft b<SP>1</SP> and the sealing ring is arranged with a projection p<SP>1</SP> extending into an enclosing housing f<SP>1</SP> to form separate chambers o<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>1</SP> to each of which fluid under pressure is supplied so that the contact pressure at the sealing face may be controlled by varying the pressure differential in the two chambers. An annular groove r<SP>1</SP> divides the sealing face, the outer portion d<SP>3</SP> having a plurality of radial oil grooves, whilst the inner part presents a continuous face to collar a<SP>1</SP>. The ring c<SP>1</SP> is urged against the collar a<SP>1</SP> by fluid pressure and by spring plungers e<SP>1</SP>; a stop g<SP>1</SP> engages a groove h<SP>1</SP> in the projection p<SP>1</SP> to prevent rotation of the ring c<SP>1</SP>. Sealing rings kl, l<SP>1</SP>, m<SP>1</SP> of O or U- shape retain the fluid pressure in chambers n<SP>1</SP>, o<SP>1</SP>. The sealing fluid oil is fed to the inner chamber n<SP>1</SP>, and through passages q<SP>1</SP> to the sealing face of the ring. The axial pressure on the sealing face of the ring c<SP>1</SP> may be varied by adjusting the pressure differential in the two chambers, as by manually or automaticallycontrolling the fluid supplied to the outer chamber o<SP>1</SP>. This chamber may be supplied with oil from the same or a different source as chamber n<SP>1</SP> or with a different oil or other fluid.
