828,652. Stuffing-boxes. ROCKWELL MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 19, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956], No. 26072/57. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] In a plug valve assembly, Fig. 1, comprising a valve plug 12 rotatable by a valve stem 18 projecting through a bore in the casing and removable retainer means, e.g. cover-plate 29, thrust race 28 and collar 22 bearing on the stem for maintaining the stem against axial displacement; co-operating means such as a collar 57 on the stem and recess 56 in the casing, which are normally held apart, are operative when the retainer means are removed to seal the stem bore against leakage of pressure fluid. In addition a stem packing means which may comprise a lantern ring 37, packing rings 42, 43, 44, and lubricant sealant grooves 38, 39 in the lantern ring is disposed axially inwardly of the retainer means and is maintained in position by a gland 46 independently of the retainer means, and a further packing such as a lubricant sealant groove 51 in the valve stem may also be provided. In a modification, Fig. 10, the space 178 above an annular piston 175 surrounding the valve stem is supplied with lubricant sealant, the pressure of which forces the piston against collar 167 of the valve stem and shoulder 172 of the casing, to act as a combined thrust bearing and packing. Alternative dispositions of the packing means and a plane thrust bearing are described. Specification 702,726 is referred to.
