Abstract
761,108. Chucks. PRATT & CO., Ltd., F. Sept. 23, 1955 [June 25, 1954], No. 18612/54. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a rotary joint for a rotating-cylinder 5 incorporating a piston for operating a chuck or clamping-device on a lathe &c. a body comprising three parts 1-3, is supported on an antifriction bearing 17 on the central-boss 18 of an end-flange 4 of the cylinder, the boss having ducts 6, 7 therein for the passage of air to each end of the cylinder to operate the piston. A floating carbon-seal 11 between the boss and the body has a central bore registering with one of the ducts 6 in the boss, and an annular-groove 10 registering with the remainder of the ducts 7; a peripheral flange of the seal is engaged by resilient means, and rotation of the seal is prevented by a radiallydisposed peg 12A. Fluid-inlets 14, 15 respectively communicate with the ducts 6, 7. As shown, the seal is urged by a helical-spring 12 against an annular sealing-member 9 secured to the boss of the flange, and has six passages 16, arranged 60 degrees apart, communicating via the groove 10 with the ducts 7, which are 120 degrees apart. Glands, seals or packing and lubricating-nipples are provided at different parts of the joint, and the flow of air to the inlets 14, 15 is controlled by valves.
