Abstract

1410454 End face seals W M BRANDT 20 June 1973 29368/73 Heading F2B A sealing arrangement for a ship's propeller shaft 101 comprises bearing plates 113, 116 on flanges 112, &c. fixed coaxially respectively to the shaft 101 and a portion of the ship's stern tube and means for supplying lubricant to the interfaces between radial surfaces of the plates 113, 116 and at least one, intermediate ring 118 between the rings 113, 116, the ring 118 being supported on an eccentric surface of a ring 50 so as to rotate freely eccentrically of the shaft 101 in operation. The flanges are urged together by springs (19), Fig. 1 (not shown), thus holding the rings 113, 116, 118 in engagement, the ring 118 rotating at about half the speed of the shaft, with the eccentric displacement preventing scoring. Oil is supplied through a channel (21) and passageways formed within the bearing plates and the ring(s), Fig. 1 (not shown). The ring 50 may be freely rotatable on a sleeve 111 borne by the shaft 101, the surface bearing the ring 50 being concentric with the shaft axis, Fig. 2, or eccentric, Fig. 4 (not shown). Further, Fig. 5, an eccentric ring 155 may be provided inwardly of the fixed bearing plate 216, the intermediate ring 208 having a portion 219 engaging the eccentric ring 155, and a protective peripheral ring 80 being provided. Also, the radial faces of the intermediate ring may be grooved, Fig. 6 (not shown), with lubricant passages (60) connecting the grooves (58) of opposite faces.
