Abstract
1365835 Propeller shaft seals J KUIKEN 30 Jan 1973 [17 Jan 1972] 2052/72 Heading F2B A ship's propeller shaft 1 is sealed where it extends through a stern tube bearing 4 by means comprising a resilient, e.g. rubber, sealing element 12 freely rotatably mounted between opposed cylindrical sealing surfaces 11 and 9 on a rotatable member 10 secured to the shaft and a non-rotatable member 7/8 fixed to the stern tube respectively, the surfaces 11 and 9 being sealingly engaged by piston type sealing rings 18 housed in grooves in the inner and outer peripheries of the element 12. The member 10 is a metal sleeve sealed to the shaft by rubber rings 16, 17 and the member 7/8 is formed by two metal rings. A thrust bearing ring 20 seated in a groove on one side of the element 12 engages a face 19 on the ring 7; the ring 20 may also act as a sealing ring. The element 12 is urged towards the face 19 by the sealed fluid pressure. Lubricant is supplied to the sealing contact faces through porous ducts 22-25 in the element 12. The rings 7, 8 and 12 and the piston rings 18 are all split radially to facilitate fitting or removal. The ring 12 may be moulded to shape or cut from a length of rubber cord. In a modification, Fig. 3, the freely rotatable sealing element 50 is of channel section and its arms are urged apart by garter springs 51, 52 carried by a ring 54 disposed in the channel. The radial cuts in the sealing rings 18 may be covered by a casing 53. (For Figures see next page.)
