Abstract

1,256,549. Rotary shaft seals. O. A. OLSEN. 1 Dec., 1969, No. 58608/69. Heading F2B. Sealing means for a ship's propeller shaft 11 or other rotary shaft comprises two relatively rotatable and axially movable sealing rings 16, 27, one, 27, of the rings being carried by a flexible diaphragm 23, 24 and having in its end. face 27a facing the ring 16 an annular packing element 30 and magnetic means, e.g. a ring of permanent magnets 32, which latter sealingly, urges the element 30 against the ring 16 and is disposed radially inwards of the element. The ring 16 is of magnetizable material and is secured to a sleeve hub 14 to rotate with the shaft 11. The ring 27 is sealingly secured to the ship's hull by two rubber discs 23, 24.
